“The bottom line for me, I just can’t see this place being developed. I have to be really honest about that, I just think it’s too precious of an asset and it simply means too much to people. I just think that recreation on a place like this is invaluable, I really do think that it helps the fiber of our community, in a societal way. I can’t stress that enough in the way that I feel about it, it’s too good for too many people.”

— Ben Crenshaw

Ben Crenshaw or “Gentle Ben” is a two-time Masters Champion with 19 wins on the PGA tour under his belt. A UT graduate and native Austinite, Ben Crenshaw won the 1984 Masters Tournament, and then won his second major title at Augusta in April of 1995, where he secured his place in golf history.

Although some professional golfers have won more major tournaments and others have collected more in winnings, Ben Crenshaw remains one of the most popular and talented players in golf, and now continues his contributions to the game as a golf course architect, and as co-chair and Vice President of The Muny Conservancy. He has big plans to preserve and restore Lions Municipal Golf Course with his business partner, Bill Coore.

“As a native Austinite and product of The University of Texas, I will stake my reputation to protect Muny. Our goal is to find a win-win solution that preserves this gem as an affordable, public golf course and green space for future generations to enjoy.

With your help, Austin's historic Lions Municipal Golf Course and green space can still be saved from development. It is imperative that we continue to work to find a solution that does not involve destroying 141 acres of treasured central Austin green space. We are confident a resolution that benefits both the University of Texas and the Austin Community is achievable.”
