We are the Muny Conservancy
The Lions Municipal Golf Course has provided public outdoor recreational opportunities and greenspace environmental benefits to the greater Austin community for over 100 years. Lying on 141 acres of environmentally sensitive land near Ladybird Lake, the property's greenspace serves as a valuable contrast to the urban and residential development that surrounds it. This land is owned by the University of Texas and is on a rolling lease with the City of Austin. UT has proposed a multi-million square foot development on the property as the highest and best use for the University interests. Losing Muny to such a drastic change would permanently destroy another of Austin’s jewels. The Muny Conservancy's goal is to negotiate terms with UT to prevent the golf course land from being developed so that this historic public asset can continue to be an important and accessible part of this city and people who live here.
Why Saving Muny Matters
- Its rich history as the first golf course to desegregate in the south
- Preservation and promotion of an urban oasis of hundreds of heritage trees and wildlife that is fundamentally unchanged in 100 years
-The affordability and accessibility of the course to the greater Austin public, including the dozens of local schools that utilize Lions as their practice course
The Muny Conservancy uses all donations to preserve and restore the 141-acres, make improvements to the course, and fight against having it developed. We sincerely appreciate all of those who contribute, if not for them Lions Municipal Golf Course would not continue to be saved.
